I booked our Taiwan High Speed Rail tickets 3 days ahead and got a 10% off. I did notice a price surge when I checked the tickets on the day. While you can definitely walk in and get a ticket, seats are not guaranteed, and you will need to check departure times.
After booking our Taiwan High Speed Rail tickets online, all I had to do was present the email confirmation with my passport, then scan the ticket. Do note that you are only allowed in an hour before your departure.
The station was huge, clean, and had plenty of seats for passengers waiting for their trains. The ride was smooth and comfortable with luggage compartments. But the seats are large enough to accommodate my medium-sized suitcase.
