We recently visited the famous Phuket Island in Thailand for a relaxing family getaway over the school break. Our main agenda was to swim, eat, sleep, and repeat. And if you’re like us, who have been planning a trip to Phuket with family and are wondering how the island is during the rainy season starting in June and July, here are our thoughts:
Travelling to Phuket in June and July
The wet season in Thailand runs from May to October, but Phuket, along with the rest of the southern islands like Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, and Khao Lak, experiences a more pronounced rainy season due to its location on the Andaman Sea coast, which brings rougher seas and limited boat services.

Why Families Should Consider Travelling to Phuket During the Rainy Season
Still, there are a couple of reasons why families can continue travelling to Phuket in June and July:

1. It’s not a constant downpour. June and July may be wetter than during the dry season, but it’s not a continuous downpour. The roughest rains in Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, and Khao Lak typically occur during their peak months, which are September and October. Since our trip to Phuket was around the third week of June, we experienced occasional short, heavy showers in the afternoons and evenings, with plenty of sunshine in the mornings and afternoons.
2. It’s less crowded. Families can enjoy the beach and amenities more during the off-peak tourist season.
3. It’s not as hot. Summer in Thailand can get very hot. So, if you enjoy the sun but not as intensely, visiting during the off-peak season is a win.
Our Chill Family Itinerary in Phuket
We stayed at Marriott’s Vacation Club Phuket, which offers all the amenities to keep families with young children entertained, including pools and kids’ splash areas. Although it’s quite a distance from the Phuket Old Town and the nearby Mai Khao beach, which receives strong waves crashing onto the shore, we intended to have minimal activities outside the hotel.

Here is a 4-day, 3-night family-friendly Phuket itinerary you can steal!
Day 1: Arrive at Phuket. Explore Turtle Town for lunch and Marriott’s Vacation Club Phuket amenities after check-in. The hotel offers a free shuttle service to its various properties, allowing us to enjoy the fire show at J.W. Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa, as well as play in the sand at Mai Khao Beach.

Day 2: Sunrise Phi Phi Island Tour. Phi Phi Islands are technically a part of Krabi! To make the most of our time and avoid crowds of tourists, we opted for a sunrise island-hopping tour with V. Marine. We highly recommend V. Marine for its friendly and helpful tour guides and immaculate speedboat! Our tour concluded at 2:30 pm, and we returned to our hotel by 4:00 pm. Read our review here.

Day 3: Pool Time and High Tea at Anantara Phuket. After being featured in the White Lotus franchise, we wanted to see Anantara Phuket for ourselves and enjoy drinks and pastries in the afternoon.

Day 4: Visit the Turtle Sanctuary at J.W. Marriot Phuket Resort and Spa, More pool time, and Kids Club activities at the hotel. The hotel offers family and kids club activities every day for free, so we were able to have some couple time as well.
We know every family has its idea of a vacation. For us, it’s about not feeling too much pressure and enjoying the area, especially with a hotel that offers impeccable service and amenities. If you’re visiting Phuket soon, we hope this blog is helpful for you! We’ll write more about our Phi Phi Islands Sunrise Tour with V. Marine and our Anantara Phuket High Tea Experience.
